The shot put competition was the one event held outside Philips Arena, at the nearby Centennial Olympic Park. Christian Cantwell of Stillwater, Oklahoma, the world's top shot putter, became the first champion of the 2004 Titan Games, being crowned on Friday, June 18. Cantwell's first toss, 22.25 meters/73 feet, proved to be his longest of the day, as well as the best of the competition. Fellow Americans Reese Hoffa and John Godina placed second and third, respectively, in what proved to be a close contest, with only about three feet separating first place from third.
