In the men’s weightlifting competition, the US team came out on top of Germany and a Pan-American team in Sunday evening competition. The USA’s Shane Hamman was named the Ultimate Titan for the second consecutive year after he pressed 500.5 lbs over his head in the clean and jerk competition. Hamman lifted a total of 918.5 lbs in the competition to place first in the 105+ kg/231+ lbs weight class. Also placing first in their respective weight classes for the U.S. men’s weightlifting team were Chad Vaughn at 77 kg/165.5 lbs and Oscar Chaplin at 85 kg/187 lbs.
For women, three of the four individual champions were from the US: Tara Cunningham (formerly Tara Nott, now married to US wrestler Casey Cunningham) at 53 kg/116 lbs, Cara Heads at 75 kg/165 lbs, and Cheryl Haworth at 75+ kg/165+ lbs. Maryse Turcotte of Canada was the women's 63 kg/139 lbs champion.
