The 2004 Titan Games serve as a preview for this summer’s blockbuster amateur athletic event, the 2004 Olympics in Athens. Held this year in Atlanta at Philips Arena on June 18-20, the second-annual Titan Games is an international competition that provided an advance look at many of the athletes who will be competing at the Summer Games this August.
The Titan Games featured various Olympic strength and combat sports – freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, boxing, judo, taekwondo, fencing, shot put and weightlifting. No rhythmic gymnastics or synchronized swimming here; the Titan Games are the equivalent of an Arnold Schwarzenegger or Bruce Willis action movie. To quote an advertising slogan for the 2004 Titan Games: “It's not all the Olympic sports, just the most painful ones!”
The 2004 Titan Games brought together nearly 200 athletes from the USA and other nations, competing in front of a total of over 11,000 fans in three days of events which took place simultaneously side-by-side on the arena floor. Here’s a sport-by-sport breakdown of some of the highlights of the 2004 Titan Games: Wrestling, Judo, Tae Kwondo, Fencing, Weight lifting Boxing, Shot Put, and Top Honors
